Marcia Griffiths: The Queen of Reggae

first_imgMarcia Griffiths (right) during her time as a member of the I-Three’s, pictured alongside Judy Mowatt and Rita Marley. Marcia Griffiths, the lauded Queen of Reggae who dons 55 years in the music industry, released a brand new album on June 14th.A foundation singer in the reggae industry, Griffith’s latest album hit airwaves, stamping her place as a longstanding influencer in Jamaica’s music arena.Appropriately titled Timeless, the album is a selection of 15 songs that pay tribute to the Studio One record label, which boasts a solid collection of songs that span the genres of ska, rocksteady and reggae.According to Griffiths, “Working on this album was refreshing and filled with fun memories of early Studio One days when those songs were being recorded.”The album, which was released under Tad’s Record, dropped its first single ‘What Kind of World” in April. The tune is a cover of a single that was first recorded in 1968 by Jamaican vocal trio, The Cables, at Studio One – the record label where she spent her formative years, alongside major acts such as Bob Marley and Bob Andy. An ode to Jamaica’s greatest long-time hits, on the album Griffith’s also covers Delroy Wilson’s “Once Upon A Time”, Ken Boothe’s “Home”, The Heptones’ “Baby Be True”, Peter Tosh’s “I’m The Toughest”, Sugar Minott’s “This Old Man”, and Abyssinians’ “Declaration Of Rights”. Also included on the album is a ska medley that includes Jackie Opel, Toots Hibbert, The Wailers, and Rita Marley, among other luminaries.Born in Kingston in 1949, Griffiths began singing at a young age in the church choir and at school. She stepped into the professional arena at only 15 years old when she was discovered by Phillip “Boasie” James, a member of the vocal group the Blues Busters, who heard her singing at a friend’s party. James arranged for Griffiths to sing at a talent competition where she wowed the crowd and was immediately invited to perform on a television variety show that very evening. She then signed on as a singer with popular ska band, Byron Lee & the Dragonaires, and landed a contract with trailblazing producer Clement “Coxsone” Dodd and his Studio One record label. By 1967, Griffiths released mega-hit, rocksteady single “Feel Like Jumping”, which quickly climbed the charts both in Jamaica and the UK. In 1969, she teamed up with Bob Andy as a duet partner. The duo’s cover of Nina Simone’s “Young, Gifted and Black” became a major international hit in 1970. However, four years later, they parted ways and Griffiths then released her second solo album, Sweet Bitter Love.In 1974, Bob Marley and the Wailers added a trio of female singers to the group called the I-Threes, which included Griffiths, Rita Marley and Judy Mowatt. While, the women were key on-stage and in-studio with Marley until his 1981 death, they also released two albums on their own amidst the flurry of Marley’s success. During her time with the legend, Griffiths also continued to record as a solo act. In 1982, she released Billboard hit, “Electric Boogie” – which turned out to be a major high point of her solo work. The song birthed the infamous dance move called the Electric Slide. Both the song and the dance move, are staples at parties around the globe even today. Throughout the years, Griffiths has continued to record regularly and tour internationally. Recently, she has recorded with many newer acts such as Shaggy, Buju Banton, and Cutty Ranks. In 1990 and 1997, she also reunited with Bob Andy for duet albums. This July and August, Griffiths will be promoting her latest album in an extensive European tour, with stops in Denmark, Sweden, France, Austria, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, The Netherlands, Slovakia and Copenhagen.last_img read more

Jamaica’s Racers Grand Prix Postponed; Organizers Hoping For August Staging

first_imgChairman of the Racers Grand Prix committee, Glen Mills KINGSTON, Jamaica – The spread of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has resulted in the postponement of premier track and field meet, Racers Grand Prix, but officials have expressed hope it can be held in August. The fifth staging of the meet, which was awarded gold status during the newly formed 2020 World Athletics Continental Tour, was set to be held at the National Stadium on June 13.However, chairman of the organising committee Glen Mills informed World Athletics in an April 2 letter that the meet would be deferred because of the ferocity of the virus, local and global restrictions on travelling and gatherings, quarantine procedures, and the inconclusive timeline of the impact of the virus.“It is now clear that our only choice is to postpone the date of this year’s meeting of the Racers Grand Prix – Kingston Continental Tour Gold meeting,” said Mills, who is also president of Racers Track Club.“We are now hoping to be able to reschedule the meeting for a date in the latter half of August. Of course, this is subject to the agreement of World Athletics, in keeping with your overall schedule. It is also subject to the availability of the stadium and the hotel on this new date.”The meet was one of 10 in the new series designed to accommodate athletes from several disciplines cut from the Diamond League for 2020. These included the triple jump, discus, 3,000-metre steeplechase and 200 metre. For these core disciplines, ranking points would have been allotted at the same level as the Diamond League.“We remain grateful that the world body recognised the type of meet that we were putting on, which has been of the highest quality,” said Mills. “And though the postponement of the event is unfortunate, once we receive the all-clear, we will ensure the meet delivers on every level.”“We encourage athletes to follow the World Health Organization guidelines and those of their local leadership to reduce the risk of catching the coronavirus. And we also encourage them to focus on their well-being and to find innovative methods to stay fit during this period,” he added.Among the athletes who had confirmed their participation at the Racers Grand Prix were 200m World champion Noah Lyles of the United States and world record 400m holder and Olympic champion Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa. The World Athletics Continental Tour series was set to begin on May 10 in Tokyo, Japan and would also have included the Fanny Blankers Koen Games in Hengelo, Netherlands; the Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland; and the Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia, Poland.CMClast_img read more

Ibom Angels Eye Maximum Points In Remaining Matches

first_imgAfter reaping their first away point from a ground as tough as the Yakubu Gowon Stadium last week, on Matchday 10 of the ongoing Nigeria Women Premier League season, Ibom Angels now have their eyes set on winning their remaining three matches so that they can secure a respectable position in Group A by the end of the regular season.Ibom Angels currently boast of the highest goal scorer in the league, Charity Reuben, with six goals. Unfortunately, her goals have only seen them hover around fourth to sixth on the table. In an interview with busybuddiesng.com, coach of the side, Whyte Ogbonda admitted that he has given up on the possibility of the Uyo-based outfit qualifying for the season-ending Super Four tournament. But that notwithstanding, they will give the rest of the campaign their best shot.“I said so because if you cannot win a match in your home where do you think you are going to get the points to qualify for Super Four?” he asked rhetorically. “Don’t forget that we drew our match with Rivers Angels and Sunshine Queens in Uyo, losing four points. So if you lose four points of your own home matches where do you think you can be able to recover those points bearing in mind that this second round everybody wants to consolidate on home victory?“So having seen that, I said it won’t be easy for us to get the Super Four qualification because you have to be realistic. This one has nothing to do with confidence but you have to tell yourself the truth that it won’t be easy.”In the meantime, the goalless draw recorded against defending Champions, Rivers Angels away from home has brought a glimmer of renewed hope for Ibom Angels. The Uyo based side succeeded in keeping their star studded hosts led by Coach Edwin Okon at bay for all ninety minutes and earned a valuable away point for their sweat, while the Jewel of Rivers dropped points at home for the first time this season.“I got some technical information on what they played in Bayelsa,” explained Coach Whyte who spent seven seasons with Rivers Angels as an assistant coach before taking over at Ibom Angels. “Because when I was in Rivers Angels, our traditional play was through the wings – we cut through the wings to open up the defence and when the diagonal passes come, inside the net.“But when they played Bayelsa (Queens), I got a technical report from people that went for the match that the technical crew of Rivers Angels have stopped using wing play, they now compact all their attackers in the centre.“So since I got that information, I had to work towards jam-packing the middle to make sure they don’t have space to operate. I think that was what gave us an edge in Port Harcourt,” Ogbonda asserted.Ibom Angels are currently fifth in Group A with 9 points but they will not be in action on Matchday 11. However, Coach Whyte Ogbonda is already looking forward to their last three matches against FC Robo Queens, Abia Angels and Bayelsa Queens.“We’ve come to Port Harcourt, we’ve gotten a draw, one point from that match so I think that happiness and everything that comes with it has gone. We are now focused on the next game coming up next week with FC Robo and subsequent matches.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Ogbonda-2-July-11.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Audio Playerhttps://www.busybuddiesng.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Ogbonda-July-11.mp300:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.RelatedAlessandro ConfenteJune 30, 2017Similar postSD Eibar vs Atletico MadridJune 30, 2017Similar postWomen’s AITEO Cup final preview: Badly wounded Rivers Angels seek healing in JosOctober 16, 2017In “Nigeria”last_img read more

Punter friendly Premier League weekend bloodies bookmakers

first_img StumbleUpon Submit Share Share A full schedule of English Premier League football this Saturday gave bookmakers a severe battering as seven out of eight market favourites won their respective matches.Bookmakers have detailed to SBC that they are still counting the cost of ‘EPL Game Week 6’ (23-25 September), as punters cashed-in on heavily backed favourites Tottenham, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.Adding salt to bookmakers’ wounds, crafty punters bet a number of accumulator bets on the weak line-up of EPL matches, with the ‘customer friendly’ results likely to cost the industry a multi-million £ pay-out.On Monday night, there would be no relief for Bookmakers EPL woes, as a heavily backed Arsenal won comfortably against West Bromwich Albion.Speaking to SBC Jessica Bridge Ladbrokes Head of PR commented on the weekend’s EPL action: “Saturday was a nightmare if truth be told, with all the well-backed favourites obliging and ‘Both Teams to Score’ markets copping it was very much a day that went in favour of punters. The two underdogs winning on Sunday helped soften the blow, but ultimately the damage had already been done.” European betting group, Kindred Plc confirmed to SBC, that Saturday 23 September 2017 had made its ‘top 10 biggest losing days’.“In the Premier League, the lack of any shocks meant barely a Kindred win in sight, Southampton v Man Utd being very comfortably our biggest hit. The trend continued abroad with our 8 of our 10 biggest global football turnover events all going the punters’ way,” stated Alistair Gill Sportsbook, Commercial Relations at Kindred Plc.“Away from the football was not much improvement. Patriotic Brits backed the cricket team to beat the West Indies, the Tour Championship went heavily the punters’ way and Joseph Parker’s win over Hughie Fury in the boxing triggered a winning 12 fold, 6 figure win for one customer, just to add insult to injury.”Now entering a crucial Autumn trading period, all bookies will be praying for ‘No Saturday 23 September repeat’. As an industry stakeholder, Team SBC would like to remind those winning punters that even bookmakers can be hurt too!last_img read more

BetRegal diary – Turning an idea on a napkin into a competitive igaming product

first_img Share Submit PartnerMatrix drives user engagement with two new deals August 13, 2020 Erik Nyman joins EveryMatrix as US lead August 6, 2020 Related Articles MoneyMatrix boosts wire transfer options by integrating Klarna’s Sofort August 24, 2020 Former Pinnacle Marketing Director Aly Lalani is one of the key drivers behind the launch of BetRegal.com, a new sportsbetting and gaming brand created to provide its customers with the “highest possible value” in prices. In the fourth diary of this series, Lalani is back to talk about the challenges of building a functional front end for the product.Having explained the genesis of the brand and defined both the go to market strategy and the beginnings of an acquisition strategy, we were ready to make our move. This takes us to October 2016, where we set a target of having the BetRegal product to market with a functional front end in time for LAC in February 2017. That’s only four months, so it’s an ambitious goal but what better way to re-establish old affiliate relationships and begin developing the brand than with a shiny new product at LAC. As it happened, it turned out to be more like April 2017 before we were comfortable with a beta version of BetRegal that had a slimmed down product offering and still had some obvious UX inefficiencies. The full product offering was tested and ready to go live with a few trusted affiliates from around July this year. Nine to ten months to turn an idea drying on the back of a napkin into a competitive (from a product offering perspective) igaming product. Still a pretty quick turnaround, right?Let’s go into this process in some more detail. It started with our decision to choose the iframe solution from EveryMatrix, rather than building the sportsbetting interface ourselves. This was a tough decision but in the end came down to efficiency. Our goal is to get to market ASAP. I have gone through the process of redesigning a sportsbook product, and it’s no easy task. We knew from the start this would ‘handcuff’ us somewhat on design and user experience, but there was a clear upside – integration using this method would take less than half the time, which clearly satisfied our desire to get to market quickly. The downside, we would have very little control over the fundamental usability aspects of our sportsbook, and would be relying on what Every Matrix defined as their sportsbetting experience to be our own… at least for now.Okay so the iframe solution takes care of the design and UX work for the sportsbook product, but there are lots of other website elements that we need to design and build. Working with EveryMatrix also allows us a very competitive casino product with games from top providers in the industry like Microgaming and NetEnt. So we need to ensure we build a user friendly, engaging casino lobby. There are many other pages that also need to be designed and developed, like the guest homepage, promotional pages. Also, there are a ton of content based pages (about us, help, FAQ’s) that will all need to be managed through some sort of CMS. Once we have the front end wire-framed and designed, we will need someone to help us actually build out our designs, and plug in the backend API’s..Not being overly technical myself, it was difficult to say the least to know where to find someone who could help us out with all of these aspects, especially given our ultra-ambitious timelines. We decided the best way to find someone who could manage this process efficiently is to find someone who has done it before. We approached EveryMatrix and asked for a list of service providers who have integrated their API’s previously. With that list in hand, we arranged initial Skype chats with each to try and find the best partner for us.In the end, we decided to work with South African based Vegas Kings to help bring our vision to life. We chose Vegas Kings for a couple of reasons. They had done this type of integration with Every Matrix before, so they knew which pitfalls to avoid. They work with some of the largest brands in the industry which is reassuring from a credibility perspective. Perhaps most importantly, they had the skill set to do both the backend API integration with EveryMatrix as well as the front end development of the pages we have designed. As much as I enjoyed this design phase, and how great it was shaping up to be in our boardroom amongst ourselves, we needed to launch the product to gain crucial customer data – in our opinion the best indicator of which changes we should make and at what priority  comes from customer feedback, through both customer support tickets and affiliate feedback. It’s not like we plan to launch the website, cross it off the list and move onto the next task. This website will be a living organism that will continually change and adapt based on the wants and needs of its users. Fortunately, after extensive work on the product with EveryMatrix, including stringent testing on applying the aggressive management of our pricing model and the connection of the player lobby to game vendors, we were in position to launch the site. Again, this is where my prior industry connections came to the fore once again, as we were able to quickly get on board with some of the affiliates I have worked with in the past. We had also developed a relationship with iGaming consultancy TAG Media, who we envisioned as conduits to help us kick-start our acquisition efforts by exposing us to a wider group of potential affiliates. TAG Media also proved to be a very valuable resource through the process of integrating and testing our affiliate platform, www.BetRegalaffiliates.com.In previous diaries, I stressed the importance of finding a European affiliate manager, but the relationship with Tom Galanis and his team at TAG Media has provided us with an effective short term solution. Of course we still plan to hire a full affiliate team, as we see affiliates as a fundamental acquisition channel in the long run. Rather than worry about hiring affiliate managers right away, we can leverage Tom and his team’s experience and network of affiliate contacts to not only acquire new affiliates, but also to manage them on behalf of BetRegal. This can only be a short term solution as eventually we need to have all acquisition channels managed internally, but I think is feasible for the first while and it helps buy me a little time to focus on the many operational issues that come along with launching a new product.A few months on, and generally I think we are moving in the right direction. Of course there have been challenges and frustrations, which we will explore in more detail in the next diary, but we are moving forwards. Certainly, as our team gets more accustomed to the EveryMatrix platform, we are learning to address some of the issues that all startups have to deal with.Stay tuned. BetRegal is starting to make its mark. Share StumbleUponlast_img read more
