A rich history

first_imgRe: “Texas charges sideline DeLay when Bush needs his strength” (Sept. 29): If you look at the history of American political scandals of the last hundred years, you have to conclude that nobody does corruption like the Republicans when they gain power. The Democrats do their best to keep up, but they never really come close to being as sleazy, especially when the GOP has got good and complacent after holding power for a while … people forget how awful the scandals of both Reagan’s and Nixon’s second terms were. For some reason, sooner or later, the GOP raincoat always pops open and we get flashed. The scandals we’re seeing now are only the ones a friendly Justice Department and friendly Congress couldn’t bury, and I bet you a gallon of unleaded there’s plenty more scandals where those came from. – Bill Murphy Mountain View Gay marriage is worth $3,000 per year to my family. If Gov. Schwarzenegger is going to stand in the way of my family winning equal protection, I would like him to send me a check in this amount. I must pay $2,400 in taxes per year to accept the health benefit package offered at no cost to me by my partner’s employer. Legal spouses are excluded from this tax, so this is a tangible loss to our household income each year. My partner and I have a child and we have spent thousands to approximate protections afforded by marriage by drafting powers of attorney for medical decisions and hospital visitation, living wills, etc. I will spread this cost out over a number of years to keep Arnold’s annual payment low. – John Crabtree-Ireland Los Angeles Illegal aliens The editorial “Policy breakdown” (Sept. 29) uses illegal aliens as a foil for our fears of post-9-11 safety. That point of view misses the issue entirely. Illegal aliens come here to work. They pay taxes on their meager salaries and at retail stores. For decades, studies have indicated that illegal aliens receive in benefits only a tiny portion of what they pay into our system. We educate their children in our schools they are taxed to support. Many of those children are U.S. citizens. Despite our protestations, we like illegal aliens. They allow us to have 99 cent per pound apples, $60/month gardeners and cut-rate nannies. Illegal aliens never complain, they don’t make a fuss and they have no political voice. They just work. – Paul Gonzales La Crescenta Teachers rebelling Why are the teachers rebelling against Prop. 74? If they would only research the archives, they would find that the LAUSD in the ’50s and ’60s, and possibly before that, they had to wait 10 years to reach what was called tenure, and to qualify for raises they had to attend institutes to further their education. Then came the unions, UTLA, etc. I know this because my mother was a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District. What has happened to the three R’s? – Don Nigherbon Winnetka Burning rubber Re: “Crippled jet touches down safely at LAX” (Sept. 22): The pilot burned the rubber off the tires of his plane to save lives. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa burned the rubber off his car’s tires to get to the airport. For what? A photo opportunity with a real hero? To bask in his reflected glory? To give people the impression that he is on top of his job? How callous, how obvious, how shameful. – Stephen Mislove Studio City 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! Schwarzenegger I would throw my hands up and say, I gave it a try but the people of California seem to be happy with things as they are, and I would go back to making millions in the movie industry. Why take the abuse from people who don’t seem to care the state is going bankrupt and that our elected officials are in the pocket of the unions? Politicians try to force things like same-sex marriage and driver’s licenses for illegals on us and although the governor was the one to stop it, his poll numbers continue to drop? I guess the old adage is true – you get the government you deserve. – Robert Gardner Sylmar Arnold owes me Re Arnold vetoes gay marriage” (Sept. 30): last_img
