Rangers boss Mark Warburton tells talkSPORT he is ‘hopeful’ of Joey Barton deal

first_imgRangers boss Mark Warburton has told talkSPORT he is hopeful of completing the signing of Joey Barton. The midfielder is out of contract at Burnley and has held talks with the Scottish giants, who will be back in the Premiership next season after a four-year absence.Warburton concedes Rangers cannot compete with the wages on offer from English clubs also interested in the 33-year-old.But he believes the lure of playing in front of a raucous Ibrox crowd and the potential of Europa League football – the club will qualify for the competition if they beat Hibernian in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final – may just convince Barton to move north.Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Warburton said of Barton: “He was in the Championship Team of the Year and he is a top class performer. I’m sure there will be many suitors after him – the level he has played at this year there is no doubt about that.“We can’t match the money down south. All we can do is offer an opportunity here to enjoy Ibrox, the 50,000 crowd, and the potential of European football this season or next.“If he buys into it then all well and good. Hopefully, we are close, but we will have to wait and see.”last_img
