SAN FRANCISCO – A Volkswagen hatchback said to be Pope Benedict XVI’s old car fetched six-figure bids on eBay but failed on Saturday to reach the seller’s target, meaning no sale. Bids on the 1999 gray Golf reached a high of $204,400. That fell short of an unspecified “reserve” target set by a Texas-based online casino,, which was selling it. A spokeswoman for eBay, Catherine Fisher, said she did not know what the seller’s minimum price was. A message left with was not immediately returned Saturday evening. Fisher said nearly 202,000 people had visited the auction. The casino bought the car in 2005 on eBay from a German man. On Friday, eBay said it had verified the car was owned by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger before he ascended to the papacy. last_img
