Changes to phone dialling in SA

first_img3 January 2007Since 16 October, all local and national calls from land-lines in South Africa have been using 10-digit numbers (seven-digit numbers preceded by area codes), while the dialling prefix for international calls made from South Africa has changed from 09 to 00.To help customers familiarise themselves with these changes, state telecoms operator Telkom is running the old dialling systems parallel to the new dialling systems up to 16 January, when 10-digit dialling and the international prefix 00 become mandatory. The change to the international dialling prefix means, for example, that a call from South Africa to the United Kingdom should be prefixed by 00 44 instead of the old 09 44.However, there is no change to the dialling procedures for calls to South Africa from overseas. The change from seven to 10-digit dialling means that when land-line to land-line calls are made within the same area (for example, Pretoria), callers should begin by dialling the area code (012, in the case of Pretoria) even though they are calling a number in the same area.“It is identical to a fixed-line call being made from a cellular phone,” explained Lulu Letlape, spokesperson for state telecommunications company Telkom. Since cellular numbers already comprise 10 digits, calls from fixed lines to cellular phones do not require any dialling changes. After 16 January, mis-dialled calls will be routed to announcements requesting that callers dial 10 digits when making local and national calls. This will continue until 16 March, after which mis-dialled calls will be routed to a “number unavailable” tone.Letlape emphasised that no extra costs would be levied for using the 10-digit dialling system or in switching to 00 as the international dialling prefix.“This national 10-digit dialling system is part of Icasa’s [the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa’s] numbering plan that, once implemented, will increase number capacity, especially in the metropolitan areas, and bring fixed-line dialling in line with the 10-digit standard used by mobile operators.”Telkom says PAXB customers who have programmed their PAXB systems for international call barring will need to re-programme their systems to avoid users being able to make unauthorised international outgoing calls.Customers should also check that any pre-programmed diallable local numbers, for example speed dial numbers, are stored in the full 10-digit format.SouthAfrica.info reporter and BuaNews Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Gareth Southgate is doing a really good job and he might want to be a part of that. England have a better chance of winning a World Cup. “But I don’t think he’d play a great deal of football for England. There are four of five midfielders that maybe come before him.”For Ireland, he’d be a key player. Province to increase number of MRI scans completed in Northern BC

first_imgThe Province says it will reach this target by running existing machines longer, establishing a central intake at the regional level to reduce duplicate referrals and appointments, adding already planned MRI machines and by adding additional capacity to the public system. In 2017-2018, Northern Health did 7,632 MRI scans, and under the new plan, the Province says Northern Health will complete 13,000 from 2018-2019.The new MRI at the Fort St. John Hospital became operational in late September of 2017. VICTORIA, B.C. – The Province says it will increase the number of MRI scans completed in Northern B.C. from 7,600 to over 13,000 by 2019.Minister of Health Adrian Dix has announced that the Province will do 37,000 more MRI exams by the end of March 2019 compared to the previous year.  To meet this number, the Province has made $11 million available to the public health-care system to add resources and capacity.“Wait times are simply too long in B.C., in part due to volumes that are 35% to 40% less than other provinces,” said Dix. “Increasing MRI exams by 37,000 exams in B.C. this year, with further increases planned for 2019-20, will reduce the uncertainty and pain caused by long waits. We plan to maximize resources and employ best practices in the public system to reduce wait times and improve care.”last_img read more

Online report system reveals ‘malpractices’ at Calcutta Medical College & Hospital

first_imgKolkata: Until a few months ago, the pathology department of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital use to get around 800 blood samples a day. However, after an online system of blood report collection was introduced at the hospital, the number of samples reduced to around 300.It was found that several unauthorised persons from private pathological centres had been submitting blood samples at the medical college to get the tests done at no cost. Also Read – Centuries-old Durga Pujas continue to be hit among revellersAccording to a source, before the online system was introduced around 800 blood samples were deposited at the pathology department of the hospital. Under this system, the patient or his family members had to fill up a requisition form issued by the pathology department of the hospital. The patient party used to get two copies of the filled up requisition form and a date was issued by authorities for blood collection. On the day of collection, the hospital authorities use to take one copy from the patient and wrap it around the sample container. After the examination process was completed, the patient used to get the report from the pathology department by submitting the other copy to the pathology department. Some persons from a few private pathological centres around the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital were using these forms to get blood reports of their patients from the pathology department of the medical college and hospital. These pathological centres charged a good amount of money to hand over these reports to their patients. Superintendent of Calcutta Medical College and Hospital Indranil Biswas said the hospital authority used to get several complaints of missing reports and there were allegations that people working with private pathology centres were using the pathology department of the medical college and hospital to conduct tests for their patients. “After the online system was introduced, the requisition form was obsolete. Now, the registration number of the patient, which is printed on the outdoor ticket, is the only identification,” said Biswas. A source said after the online system was introduced, the number of sample deposit has come down to around 300 a day. It is alleged that a section of staff of the medical college and hospital were involved in corruption.last_img read more

Football How will Ohio State stop Maryland running back Ty Johnson

Ohio State junior linebacker Jerome Baker (17) sacks Army senior quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw during the second quarter of the 2017 OSU- Army game on Sep. 16. OSU won 38-7. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorWith just over one minute to go in a tie game, Maryland junior running back Ty Johnson took a handoff at the Minnesota 34-yard line, spotted a hole and raced through it past defenders for the game-winning touchdown. This is the exact type of rush Ohio State will attempt to prevent Saturday when the Buckeyes face off with the Terrapins at Ohio Stadium. This season, Johnson has 46 carries for 411 yards, an average of 8.93 yards per carry, which ranks him No. 4 in the FBS. A big-play threat, Johnson has gained at least 34 yards on a carry five times in his team’s four games this year, including a 74-yard touchdown in Week 2 against Towson. “He’s got great acceleration, he really can go,” Ohio State linebackers coach Bill Davis said. “When he gets going, he’s got great acceleration and he’s got good vision and patience. He’s a good back.” Johnson rushed onto the scene as a freshman when he averaged 7.1 yards on 35 carries. The 5-foot-10, 208-pound running back followed up his debut last season with 110 carries for 1,004 yards, an average of 9.1 yards per carry, the most by a Terrapins player in a season with at least 100 rushes. Prior to this year, Johnson was placed on the Doak Walker Award watch list.“He’s a real good back,” senior defensive end Jalyn Holmes said. “He’s got a big heart, man. He plays a lot bigger than what he actually is, so we’ve got to be ready for him.”Johnson is tied with sophomore running back Lorenzo Harrison III with a team-high 46 carries, but Johnson averages twice as many yards per carry as Harrison. The Buckeyes defense has not given up many long runs this year. The only 34-plus yard rushes came against the second-team defense in the third quarter of blowouts of UNLV and Army, both of whom are top 10 rushing offenses in the FBS. In the season opener, Indiana averaged 0.6 yards per carry without a rush over nine yards and the next week, Oklahoma averaged 2.8 yards per carry and did not run for a gain of more than 13 yards. In order for the success against the run to continue, Ohio State understands it must play disciplined as Johnson and Harrison are apt to bounce plays to the outside if they do not see holes in the middle. “They bounce it out, they run around, they don’t even hit their hole, they sometimes bounce it out and those are fast guys and we’re just going to have to contain them,” redshirt senior defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle said.Davis and defensive line coach Larry Johnson emphasized defenders at all levels of the defense must maintain their gap responsibility and not over-pursue, noting it would be the key to victory.“I think the two running backs are dynamic,” Larry said. “I think they’ve both got great vision. They can cut on a dime.”Johnson’s speed is even more important now than in the first couple weeks of the season due to Maryland’s struggle to keep quarterbacks healthy. The Terrapins are down to third-string quarterback Max Bortenschlager as Tyrrell Pigrome and Kasim Hill suffered season-ending torn ACLs. Therefore, they will likely rely heavily on their run game to produce scoring drives and churn the clock against Ohio State.A unit featuring five players who are at least 6-foot-3 and weigh more than 300 pounds will pave the way for Johnson. Though the Terrapins do not have a single senior on their offensive line, all linemen are in their second seasons as starters. Redshirt junior right tackle Damian Prince, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 315 pounds, leads the line as this is his third season as a starter.“It’s going to be a good test for us,” Holmes said. “They have a great offensive line. They’ve got a great running back.” read more
